Because Trayvon Martin Wasn't Enough...Chavis Carter

21 year old Chavis Carter, an African American male picked up by the police for drug possession and warrants from another state commits suicide while handcuffed in the backseat of a patrol car.

Seriously.

No really.

Is this a joke?

WHAT THE FUCK?

This is utterly depressing and infuriating for so many reasons and to be honest I am unsure of the worst part. I do not even know where to start....WHAT THE FUCK?!

First of all, were these police officers fucking stupid? Yes, I am going to swear a lot in this post, by the way. Anyway, these officers are either dumb as shit or they just do not give a fuck! Who would honestly believe that Chavis Carter committed suicide given the circumstances of the situation?

1. This dude was handcuffed. HANDCUFFED. This is what handcuffed is, in case any one does not know...

Now I realize that this image is small but I'm sure that every one can see the handcuffs. Now HOW IN THE FUCK COULD somebody retrieve a hidden gun and shoot themselves with it?!

I guess one could make the argument that this young man was skilled enough to get out of handcuffs, well if he is that talented why would he want to kill himself? I mean come on now this is just common god damn sense!

2. The police claim that the arresting officers accidentally missed the gun while they searched Carter prior to placing him in the car. Things get missed all of the time drugs, knives, and apparently guns. If this were really the case, I mean if guns were really commonly missed don't you think more cops would be getting shot while in the squad car? Yeah what the fuck ever. 

3. Chavis Carter contacted his girlfriend stating that he would call her from the jail. Suicide is typically contemplated and it is a well known fact that suicidal people display symptoms and warnings of what they are about to do like saying goodbye to their loved ones. This doesn't sound like a god damn goodbye this sounds like a I'm going to call you later because I plan on fucking living! 

CHAVIS CARTER WAS MURDERED. THE POLICE KILLED HIM. 

Now we don't know the whole situation but we do know that this man was handcuffed, seated in the squad car, and coherent enough to have spoken with his girlfriend. I really highly doubt he was a threat or there was a good reason for his murder. He was tragically and unfairly murdered. 

Did the nation not just suffer a horrible, racially charged travesty just months ago when the innocent 17 year old Trayvon Martin was fatally shot? It is clear that racism is alive and well in America and it seems that the police are actually the guilty ones (despite overwhelming evidence Martin's shooter, George Zimmerman was not immediately arrested and was even released on bail). 

My issue is WHAT THE FUCK is our law enforcement doing? Have Americans displayed so much apathy that the law can just do whatever they want? I have experienced so unfair treatment with police officers mainly rude and racist comments, and I am a white woman so I can not even began to imagine how black men are being treated. Well I mean clearly it's not going well, but the point is that citizens must do something. We can not lay down and continue to allow this to happen or we are also guilty and we are also to blame for the death of these young males. 

The "if you see something say something" slogan shall go both ways! Please, if you see an officer carrying out the law, exercise your rights! Watch them and film them if you want. The quote "Evil prevails when good man fail to act" good not be more important than it is now. We are no better off than we were 60 years ago with the murder of Emmit Till. Let's not claim to be humane until we actually are. 

If you see something...say something! Even if it is the police! 

And seriously though if any of you know how you can shoot yourself in the head while being handcuffed PLEASE educate me on this!

Breast feeding in most cases, is the best option for babies.

I'm sufficiently confident in the fact that the majority of pregnant women receive this news at one time or another, whether it is at a parenting class, in the OBGYN's office, at a WIC appointment, or even maybe on a radio ad or billboard. My point being that most women receive enough information and support to be able to make the best decision for themselves and their babies.  So why does Mayor Bloomberg feel that he should try to enforce a breast feeding policy in New York City hospitals? It is NOT illegal to give your baby formula and ultimately the mother should be able to make her own decision without being pressured or made to feel guilty.

Mayor Bloomberg plans to impose a breast feeding policy in New York City hospitals known as "Latch on NYC." Formula will be locked up in the fashion that medication would be and should a mother ask for it, she will first be lectured on the benefits of breast feeding and pressured to continue with it. Mothers will not be forced to breast feed but I still feel that Bloomberg is totally out of line on this one.

Imagine you have just given birth to your beautiful and lovely first born child. You are exhausted, emotional and just struggling overall. You may even be suffering from Post-Partum Depression. You truly desire to bond with your baby but it is more difficult than you thought it would be and you are scared. One of the many things that may be going wrong is your ability to nurse your baby. Many women may find comfort and relief in formula, which does have benefits too you know! However, should this policy be implemented these border line depressed mothers will only be made to feel worse. Usually mothers who are suffering Post-Partum Blues or Post-Partum Depression have feelings of guilt so can somebody please explain to me why on Earth it would be a good idea to basically say to these mothers "hey you are tired and already feeling upset about your capabilities but let us just tell you how bad you really suck because you don't want to give your baby the best option possible!" Even if it is said in a kinder and more objective way this is what these mothers are most likely to perceive, so they will either harbor feelings of guilt and resentment or continue to struggle in despair. Either way "Latch on NYC" isn't going to help those mothers or the babies.

My other point is more of a long term perspective on this situation. If formula becomes stigmatized because of the extreme pressure to use breast milk, how will people feel about babies who cannot be nursed? There are many cases where it is simply impossible, perhaps the mother has a disease that could be spread through nursing like HIV, or what if the child is being adopted immediately? Will these babies be considered to be at a disadvantage because they cannot be breast fed? I feel that it is extremely unfair to further stigmatize these groups of people, and it does not exactly contribute to the argument of LBGT being just as good as straight parents. I cannot help but think that this stigma will only make it harder for gay men to adopt or even for single men to be respected in regards to having a baby.

This may sound a bit contradictory given my last comment about men raising babies and I apologize but I also just cannot ignore the fact that Bloomberg is a MAN! Why does he think he can make this decision for WOMEN? I really highly doubt that a wealthy old white man can relate or understand what new mothers are going through, which is why I feel that this is really a personal choice that should not be subjected to criticism or shaming, ever.

I also cannot help but think that Mayor Bloomberg may actually have a financially driven hidden agenda. For many mothers the cost of a baby exceeds what they can actually provide thus making them eligible for the WIC program. WIC provides women, infants, and children with checks to purchase specific foods and baby formula. The WIC program in New York City would be able to cut back a lot of costs if they could reduce the amount of funds needed for formula (it is not exactly cheap), and perhaps the Mayor has a desire for those funds to be placed elsewhere. That is just my speculation because I haven't known a politician to make such drastic changes for the overall health of the people, especially if it is not an imminent risk.

Molecular Tracking-Lyel Summers A Unit of the State

    "Fuck Me", Lyel muttered under his breath. Blood trickled down the side of his face. He noticed a pool of blood next to him on the sweltering asphalt. The pool spread quickly; making its way around the outline of Lyel's body. His eyelids began to feel heavy and his body quickly weakened. He tried to retain the thoughts he had been pondering just moments ago, yet the imagery blurred then faded before he could grasp any of it. Blackness crept suddenly into his mind and very soon there was just nothing.
     Lyel's body lay there on the sidewalk of Venician Avenue as many Units glanced fearfully. Small children looked on sparingly as their parents frantically pulled them away. The Patrollers occasionally kicked him to test for signs of life and checked his pulse to ensure he was not dead. If he was dead then The Patrollers would drag him away with a sign that would read "Thought Betrayer." All of the onlookers would know that he had been punished for having thoughts against The State. However he was not dead, in fact he was very much alive, only unconscious at the very worst he would suffer a mild concussion. Because he was not likely to die he would be left to come to on his own, another way of sending a warning to The Units. A message that would clearly display the power and ability of The State to know all things.
     In the listening room, two Patrolmen stared blankly at the surveillance camera that portrayed the young boy lying in his own blood. The bottom of the screen displayed captioning...
